Affordable ways to explore Boston in the Summer

As a teen in Boston, it can feel like there are limited options for spending time outside and exploring Boston with a budget. Fortunately, there are many cost-effective ways to enjoy Boston. Also, there are numerous health benefits to spending time outside.
According to UC Davis Health, nature encourages people to be active through walking, biking, or other activities. Additionally, nature helps reduce cortisol levels, muscle tension, and increases vitamin D levels.
UC Davis Health wrote, “Regular access to green spaces has been linked to lower risks of depression and improved concentration and attention.”
The waterfront is an incredible way Boston residents can access blue and green spaces. Chapter 91 of the Massachusetts Public Waterfront Act is a bylaw that protects the public access to the waterfront. Chapter 91 mandates, “nonwater-dependent projects must provide greater benefits than detriments to the public’s rights in waterways”.
Public benefits include public restrooms, waterfront walkways, and others. Boston Harborwalk provides an interactive map that can help you find public facilities along the waterfront that offer free Wi-Fi, rooftop access, or restrooms.
The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) is an art museum which specializes in contemporary art in Seaport, Boston. At the ICA, teens under the age of 18 have free admission. Teens also get to access the water shuttle for free. The water shuttle helps transport people between the ICA and the ICA watershed exhibition space in East Boston. It is suggested to buy your ticket in advance. Additionally, on Thursday night admission to the ICA is free for all ages.
Boston Public Library offers museum passes or discounts to a select number of museums such as the New England Aquarium, Museum of Science, and others. As a result, teens with a library card are able to visit museums for a low cost. A library card is free for all Massachusetts residents.
Only for the summer, Boston After Dark is a series of events all throughout Boston. Boston After Dark makes fun and safe spaces for teens. There is free food, photo booths, live DJs, dancing, and glow in the dark glasses. Events are held every Friday until August 29th. No registration is required, just show up and bring your friends to have a good time.
There are so many inexpensive ways to enjoy the summer in Boston as a teen. I hope this empowers you to spend time in nature and spend time having fun.
