Soundtrack to success: the advantages of playing an instrument
To partake or not to partake? That is the question many students face when countered with the opportunity to join a musical activity within their school, whether it be orchestra, band, or choir. Music is often seen as a mere hobby or an activity for leisure, the benefits of playing an instrument are far beyond that and often leave lasting positive impacts on youth as they grow into adulthood.
Especially after a stressful pandemic with society still feeling the impact of masks and social distancing, some youth may find difficulty rejoining their community. Taking an instrument, or even interacting with music in general, can be the solution to this common predicament, as it allows our minds to finally relax and ease out of a long day at school. Chill out with some sheet music, and get distracted by the rhythmic beat of the music. As stated in the article “How Does Music Affect Society?“, music can soothe us when we’re worried, encourage us when we’re weary, and re-inspire us when we’re deflated.” Music has been shown to have an impact on mood and thus the selection of music you choose to listen to can greatly boost your day.
Yuhe Chen, a sophomore and fourth-year violist in the Boston Latin School orchestra, describes his experience as one of great personal growth. “Towards my beginning at BLS, my parents greatly encouraged me to take up an instrument. My dad gave me a selection of instruments to choose from and asked me to decide my top three choices, or else he would do so for me. I admit my introduction into the school orchestra was not voluntary, but I do not hold any regrets or upset feelings at the new experiences my dad’s one action gave me. My viola has been with me practically throughout my whole journey ever since I started at this new school and has played a part in shaping who I am today. I also feel proud to be able to represent my school at the concerts, not as afraid of playing a wrong note anymore, as I knew that my fellow violists were right there with me.”
However, why specifically take an instrument? What good comes from playing with a group? Music is a social activity, where different groups of instruments play a harmonic tone in unison. It allows musicians to add to one another’s melodies, working together to create auditory bliss. School bands provide the opportunity for students to connect with others through a shared passion, creating both a welcome community, and a series of interconnected friendships. It instills confidence within shy students to overcome their stage fright whilst performing in front of a large audience. If you ever get intimidated before a performance, just remember that you’ll be playing among a group, always surrounded by musicians who are experiencing the very same! Thus, if you ever see a fellow musician in the halls, definitely greet them! It’s much easier to bond with someone you’ve shared an experience with. They might even be able to help you with your musical journey in the future!
So, whether you’re looking for a part-time hobby, a quick way to destress, or even an extracurricular to add to your resume, an instrument is the answer. And even perhaps if music might not be for you, who knows? You might conquer a severe case of stage fright or make a new friend along the way!
