More than just a “Dive Bar”

Inside the Delux Cafe. Lots of funky lamps and fun postcards on the walls.

Local restaurant, Delux Cafe has been serving the community for more than a decade

Listen to an audio version of this article!

This ambient restaurant can only be described as a little slice of heaven tucked away just a couple steps from Back Bay Station. Delux Cafe is a haven for the occasional tourist, rambling in with suitcases hoping for a break from the rigid brick and cobblestone streets, but really, this is a place for the locals.

This small but mighty place has been the Friday night ritual for many families, young adults, tourists, and Boston for years, and it’s not stopping now.  On a regular night, there might be a group of 20 somethings crowded at the bar and chattering back and forth, but there are also the families huddled in the booth seat in the back, laughing loudly as their baby babbles endlessly.

“We’re definitely, like, a one stop shop, mom and pop.” says the owner Laura Hafner.

Housing only ten tables, it might seem that Delux Cafe is cramped, but this close knit atmosphere does not cause any concern. The regular crowd do not mind the closeness, as they are awaiting the promise of a delicious meal.

A unique part to the magic of Delux Cafe, is its phenomenal but ever changing menu. While some dishes always stay the same, like their popular quesadilla with sour cream and their homemade fruity salsa, and their mouth watering burger with a generous side of fries and homemade ketchup, most things on the menu are subject to change. This means that the food is always phenomenal while also never failing to surprise loyal customers.

Additionally, the decor is also a vital part to Delux Cafe’s signature charm. The year round colorful Christmas lights decorate the walls and banisters, twinkling above patrons as they devour their meals or sit at the bar. The dragged out Elvis lamp on the end of the bar, conveniently nicknamed Shelvis by Hafner and the other workers, is another colorful addition to the bright interior.

While Delux does sport some Elvis memorabilia, the main star of the show is the warm atmosphere created by the owners and workers. Walking into Delux, patrons are taken care of and surrounded by a lively crowd of people. It is promised that every person will find a new favorite dish, old memento, or possibly a new friend.

Through many renovations, redecorations, and menu changes, Delux Cafe has continued to be a South End staple, and will for years to come.
