Holland Tech Vignette: Episode 7
I was transitioning to my F-Block class when my friend Survive ran up to me asking me if I saw what was on the news, so I pulled out my little iPhone I had at the time to see what she was talking about. I couldn’t find it, so I told her to just show me on her phone instead, and what she showed me I can never forget. She showed me one of the girls who was on the varsity basketball team was really a 32-year-old woman who posed as a high schooler in different schools.
My jaw was on the floor while reading what was said underneath the news video: “Calls for answers intensifying after a 32-year-old woman was criminally charged posing as a high school student for months.” I asked Survive if she had told Ms. Hoda yet, and she said no, so I told her to let’s go and tell her. We ran to Ms. Hodas’s office while my teacher, who was standing at the door was yelling my name, telling me to come back, but I ignored him and continued running to Ms. Hodas’s room.
She heard me and Survive calling her name, so she kind of poked her head out the door to see what was going on. “Have you seen the news?” Survive had asked her. “No! What’s on the news?” she responded. Survive then pulled up the same news video she showed me, Ms. Hoda had this shocked expression on her face like she had seen a ghost while watching the video. I don’t think Ms. Hoda recognized the name Daniela because she asked us who that was and what grade she was in, so I and Survive had described Daniela to her and told her she was the ninth grader and when she realized she hurried out of the room with her walkie-talkie and sent us back to our classes. Survive and I went our separate ways and didn’t hear anything about it for the next day or so. Two former ninth graders who had classes with her got interviewed, and people continued talking about it for like a week, and then it died down because nobody cared about it anymore.
