In a world where music boundaries are constantly challenged and redefined, Genesis Owusu has emerged as a true pioneer. With his sound, dynamic stage presence, and addictive lyrics, this highly talented Ghanaian-Australian musician has captured the attention of audiences worldwide. During this year’s Boston Calling, Owusu discussed his career as well as the elements that influence his music.
In 2017, Owusu started his career with the release of his EP, “Cardrive“, which garnered positive feedback, immediately positioning him as an emerging artist in the music industry. Owusu’s music defies categorization, blending a mix of genres, including hip-hop, funk, soul, and alternative rock. This unique mix creates a discography that invites you into a world where creativity knows no limits.
In discussing his musical influences, Owuso reflects on the impact of his environment and experiences. “I think more subconsciously than literally…the music is just an expression of who I am and like the experiences that I’ve been through, and none of that would have happened without the places that I’ve lived in, like the family around me and the people around me.” Owuso acknowledges the importance of his environment and heritage, and with the support of his loved ones, he formed his artistic expression.
Going into depth about the transformative power of music and art in his own life, Owusu added, “I feel like I learned from a young age that music and art in general, I was able to understand things easier through that than I could just through conventional conversation.” What began as a personal project meant to serve as a way of expression has become something much greater, as his music relates deeply with others, serving as a source of peace, inspiration, and connection.
A distinctive mark on his musical career, Owuso’s performances on stage are also profound in that they are erratic and full of energy. In his own words, “I feel like who I am onstage and offstage, I like almost different people who are like different sides, completely different sides of the same person. And I feel like as soon as I step onstage, it’s like a channeling of some sort…it’s just a total expression of energy that I need to get out.” Onstage, each movement and note carries this driving force, creating a shared experience of raw talent and uniqueness that adds more depth to his music.
Owusu described his upcoming album, “Struggler” as “…an absurd and chaotic world that we’re living in. I think it’s like, you know, thunder and lightning bolts, but we, we move through, we push through. That’s kind of been, the mode of existence. And that’s kind of the mode of existence carrying on to this next album that I’m putting out for you.” Owusu is a revolutionary musician who defies musical boundaries with his addictive sound and entertaining performances. His music serves as a form of inspiration, connection, and self-expression, resonating with audiences everywhere. “Struggler” will release on all platforms on 18 August 2023.
