College, stress, and the coronavirus
Diary Entry 1
I was doing homework on Sunday when I heard the words “what the—” coming from my brother’s room. I glanced at the clock and saw that it was around the time my brother was supposed to hear back from his dream college. I rushed past my door and saw my brother’s face and knew. Then, I started screaming my head off, and we ran downstairs together to tell my parents the good news.
My brother is smart, but his grades don’t really reflect that, so I admit that I was shocked he had gotten in. It’s been a week, and I still can’t believe it. I’m so happy for him, though, and I think that all of his future classmates will challenge to work even harder.
He’s now watching all of the good movies he missed out on while writing his college apps. Since last week, he’s seen “The Blue Angel,” “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane,” and “The Best Years of Our Lives.” He really liked “The Blue Angel,” but he said that “The Best Years of Our Lives” was too predictable. (I disagree). Anyway, he plans to borrow “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “City Lights” from the library in the next couple of days. Those two movies are some of my all-time favorites, so if he doesn’t like them, I’ll be deeply offended.
Diary Entry 2
The weekends are going by so quickly lately, and it doesn’t help that I’ve been procrastinating more. I used to be pretty good about getting stuff done, and I would only procrastinate by doing other work. For example, if I didn’t want to do Latin homework, I would procrastinate by doing history homework. But now I’m just getting distracted. (Actually, I’m procrastinating by writing this— I should be reading my history textbook).
March is a very long month without any breaks from school except for the weekend, so I’m counting down the days to April vacation. I’ve been super tired lately (I’ve stayed up until 2:00 A.M. twice this past week), so 10-minute naps are lifesavers. It’s been so long since I’ve finished a book, watched a movie, or just took life slowly.
However, I am trying to stay positive! Next week, my life should calm down a little, and I can finally catch up on all of the missed activities I haven’t had time for. I’m also planning on dropping some extracurriculars because I have too much on my plate. My brothers have surprisingly been very helpful by baking cookies and doing some of my chores, so I’m grateful for them!
Diary Entry 3
Today was a pretty normal day. It’s Sunday, but I woke up at 7 (I know, eww) to finish my homework. I definitely could have been more productive, but I’m glad that tomorrow is Monday! I know this sounds weird, but Mondays are among my favorite days of the week because I like fresh starts. The middle of the week is when it starts to get rough for me.
I had breakfast with my family a couple of hours later, and there were some chocolate-covered strawberries that my dad and I ate. Then, I made my dad watch “Un Chien Andalou,” continued with my homework, took a nap, and went on a walk.
I know it’s been a year since the coronavirus hit, so it’s time for some reflection. It’s kind of crazy how much I’ve changed (both on the inside and the outside). I cut my bangs, grew out my bangs, shaved off like all my hair, and am growing it back out again. I’m also almost definitely less in shape than I was this time last year, which is disappointing but fine. I discovered new passions, read a lot (although not as much as I would have liked), and spent more time with my family than I could before. All in all, it’s been a year of self-development, but there’s always room for improvement. Hopefully, this time next year, I can look back and see that I’ve grown even more.
