Boston Latin School Walk-Out: “Standing With Palestine”
The date is December 1st, 2023 — and a group of students from Boston Latin School have just participated in an unsanctioned walkout from campus In protest of a schoolwide ban on discussing the Israel-Palestine conflict. More than one hundred students left Boston Latin at 12:45 PM, passing through the MassArt campuses on their way down to Evans Way Park, holding signs, joining in chants, and accompanied by a number of faculty and alumni. The student organizers of the protest believed that students should be allowed to share their voices on the current event publicly, but have instead been suppressed by the BLS administration.
When questioned on the events leading up to this protest, one of the organizers explained, “It was really important because so many students have been silenced by the administration, and from that comes an anger, and students […] should have the right to express how they feel.”
That message resonated with the attendees beyond the Boston Latin School community.
When asked about the significance of this protest, a non-BLS teacher said. “[We’re] here because [we] believe in the power of students making change.”
A student from the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science went on to summarize the general sensation among these attendees, saying, “I’m so proud of students for fighting for what they believe in and not being afraid.”
