Family Guy and why it’s better than the Simpsons
The Simpsons and Family Guy are both animated shows of dysfunctional families and their lives. The Simpsons was released on December 17, 1989 on the network Fox. It’s a comedic show about a family living in Springfield. Family Guy was released a decade after on January 31, 1999 also on Fox. Despite its long run, the Simpsons still has remained somewhat relevant but its golden age has died out as the years have gone by. The reason for this is that the show just doesn’t hit the way it did anymore. I also prefer shows that aren’t family friendly that are childish and vulgar in a funny way. I also grew up watching shows like Family Guy, American Dad, etc. I forever love the risks they take, even when they become controversial, it’s what makes the show special and hilarious. I honestly just don’t like the characters on the Simpsons. Homer pisses me off.
Family Guy is better because the risks they take are although controversial, they’re also funny and entertaining. And since it’s not family friendly, it’s funnier, fresh, and raunchy makes it comically entertaining. The Simpsons on the other hand are crazy and deranged. I say this because of the starring character, Homer Simpson, trying to destroy the world. It just got to a point for me where I lost interest in it. Family Guy makes its viewers laugh out loud when watching it. Even though Peter is also dumb and dense, I like him better plus I find him way more funnier than Homer.
For instance, The Simpsons “…has put incredible focus in developing three-dimensional characters that end up being a lot more memorable because they are so beautifully layered.” This is true but in the past, this has not helped them in the long run as now there’s so much going on with all characters and I don’t always like that. Now I haven’t seen all episodes of the Simpsons but from what I’ve seen, I haven’t enjoyed it. I’d rather see Homer improving or at least trying to be there for his kids as a father. Family Guy on the other hand, makes jokes that continuously take a lot of criticism that allows them to stay relevant. For example, when Meg went to a party with her friends and they were playing spin the bottle, once the bottle hit Meg, she went into the closet. When she got in there, there was a boy and they kissed but little did she know that it was her brother, Chris, that she had kissed. I personally was disgusted that it was even considered a joke but in the end, they both decided to never speak of it ever again and even brushed it off. To me that’s super disturbing and uncomfortable.
Family Guy also has very distinctive characters. For instance, Chris is a teenager who is awkward and completely oblivious to women. Later on though, Chris suddenly had all the hype at school with the girls, social battery on 10 at all times. My favorite, Stewie, is a genius baby who wants to kill his mom and ruin the world. As the seasons go on though, his personality drastically changes where he is no longer a baby or trying to conquer anything and knowledge of the dysfunctional family he has. Brian, another one of my favorite characters, is a talking dog who drinks martinis who keeps Stewie in check whilst dealing with his own problems. I like this because Stewie as a baby trying to kill his mom was funny because he was a baby, and the fact that a talking dog was telling him right and wrong. But in the later seasons, Brian becomes this arrogant liberal guy who drinks too much and can’t keep a steady relationship. “ I mention this because when I’m watching a show, I don’t exactly like a political guy to be in it and be arrogant about it. Plus, it pissed me off and I don’t wanna be mad while watching a show. Both shows share this aspect but Family Guy is more tolerable because Brian is moreso a side character and we don’t have to see him much. But as for the Simpsons, since Homer is the starring character, seeing him being stupid all the time is not tolerable.
Homer Simpson, in the beginning, was dense but his family would help him through his confusions. But as the seasons went along, he became even more dense to the point that his own family couldn’t even help him. An article by the name of “ The Simpsons: 10 Characters Who Changed The Most From The First Season” states that, “ Now he is more likely to destroy Springfield than he is to give his kids a lift to their after-school activities.” It got boring with the same plot of Homer trying to take over Springfield in every episode. Him trying to destroy Springfield rather than complete his fatherly duties would honestly get a little repetitive. Another character development would be Lisa Simpson and she is always altering whatever aspect she’s attached to her persona. It’s honestly something else every season. In the same article above, it states, “ From her McCartney-enforced vegetarianism to her spiritual awakening and conversion to Buddhism, Lisa has gone through a lot of phases. “ Now at first, my interest would peak at these phases but eventually I would get bored with the constant changes. In an article called “ Simpsons vs Family Guy: Which is the better show? “ There’s a section that talks about the audience and legacy of both shows. As said in the article, “ News and ratings show that the Family Guy has higher views and downloads today than the Simpsons. “ showing how the Simpsons has become tedious over the years. They also predicted the Titanic Submersible incident the past few weeks and when they predicted that the NSA was tapping people’s devices and spying through them. The way the Simpsons have been predicting things before they happen has been a little weird and freaky. It makes the show have an eerie sense to it. Despite all this, in the end, both shows are good and funny in their own ways. Both might do something than the other but in the end, Family Guy takes it for me with the unpredictable storytelling of the story.
