“The Blackening” is the horror movie we all needed
The Blackening is a comedy and horror-based movie for older teenagers and adults. This feature-length film consists of a mostly Black cast and a Black director, Tim Story. The Blackening is about a group of long-lost black friends from college. They all meet up for their 10-year anniversary in a cabin in the woods just to hang out for some fun. Of course, they go into the dangerous abandoned cabin with immediate skepticism and as they predicted, the cabin in the woods turns into a fight for their life in the woods.
When I told my friends that we should watch “The Blackening,” they all gave me weird looks. We had already watched “Across the Spider-Verse,” so what else were we going to watch? They just assumed the movie was bad and moved on. But once we got to the theater and the movie started everyone was having a good time. The jokes were landing, the scares were thrilling and nerve-wracking, and the acting was good. This is definitely a movie you see in theaters or with friends or even at a party; you can watch it by yourself but you will definitely lose that laugh-out-loud aspect that you would only get with others.
The whole premise of the movie is a joke, obviously satirical. A whole movie revolving around Black people in a horror cabin? The literal poster of the movie says “We Can’t All Die First.” Paying homage to the “black person in a typical horror film getting killed first” trope. “We just kept going into this place that these characters would be extremely offended by,” Tim Story, the director of the movie, even said. “And we just kept having a lot of fun with it.” When my friends and I went to go watch this movie (A bunch of Black people going to watch “The Blackening”). On the inside, we all felt the same way. Like his movie was for us. It was just an easy watch and allowed us to express ourselves.
I honestly like the movie. Of course, it was nothing groundbreaking but it offered me a good time. It wasn’t just the movie that was good but the audience too, I’m sure the director foresaw this part of the movie watching. There aren’t many critiques I would give the movie but some parts of it do seem low-budget, which would make sense since it was only five million dollars, and has made around 16 million in the box office. These numbers are amazing for a “low-budget” movie in only a few weeks. The score that the movie was given on by critics IMDb was 6.5/10, and I can confirm that this is a fair rating, but taking into consideration all other aspects of this movie watching I would bump it up to a 7/10. “The Blackening” is 72nd in popularity for all movies out right now, with most movies at the top being superhero movies and such. This movie was a good change of pace from the bombardment of Marvel or DC movies that they continuously capitalize on. People are getting bored of superhero after superhero movies. There needs to be some change, some different humor, just some original ideas. Who wants to watch the same thing or some genre over and over again? NO ONE. And “The Blackening” gladly delivers in all those facets.
