Jaylen Brown Has Been Traded, How Does This Affect The Team and The City?
The Celtic’s have been known for making genius marketing decisions, but considering their most recent trade, all that reputation has been thrown out the window. Jaylen Brown has proved to not just the city, but the whole NBA that he is a contender for an MVP award in the 2025-26 season. Recently, in the off-season, Brown was a part of a trade deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, in which the Celtics received five other players; 36-year old Paul George, two unnamed first-round draft picks, and two unnamed second-round draft picks. Objectively, this is seen as an inconsiderate trade for the team and people of the city. To send a consistent all-star MVP candidate for an old, injury-prone guard like George is ridiculous in and of itself. This left Bostonians in shock the day it was announced and it’s already being compared to some of the worst trade deals of all time. The difference between a good trade and a bad one can be seen in the long term effect for the franchise and the overall impact on the team.
In 2025 we saw one of the biggest blockbuster trades the NBA had to offer, referring to the Luka Doncic trade when he got sent to the Los Angeles Lakers. Doncic was also coming off an MVP caliber season and was traded for an injury-prone Anthony Davis and an average role player, Max Christie. This destroyed the people of Dallas’s faith in their team, and made them start hating the general manager Nico Harrison. They blamed him for the next season as they fell from the 5th seed to 12th seed in the Western Conference. Celtics fans are already asking for the general manager Brad Stevens to be fired just for this act of trading Brown. The blame lands on Stevens mainly because he refused to trade for super-star Giannis Antetokounmpo all because he didn’t want to include young players with the Jaylen Brown package trade. Players like Hugo Gonzalez and Baylor Scheirman were originally going to go to Milwaukee with Jaylen Brown but Stevens had a different plan and decided to keep all his young players, putting all his trust in their future careers in Boston. In an article from YahooSports focusing on the aftermath of the trade, Jeremy Lambert a sports journalist states “Maybe including Hugo or Baylor, and a couple of more unprotected first round picks would’ve gotten the deal done, but we’ll never know.” There was a great opportunity to retrieve Antetokounmpo, a far better player, in exchange for Brown, but because of the GM’s blind trust in his young players, that opportunity was shot down.
There is an effect on the court in Boston, but there’s also an effect off the court. In little words this trade has devastated Bostonians. It left the city in a state of shock, having everyone thinking the trade was pure nonsense. Jaylen has been in the city for 10 years now connecting with fans, and this could cause a lot of people to follow him to Philly. There are many NBA fans who are fans of a certain team because of a specific player, and many people already stopped supporting the Celtics in conclusion of this trade. There has been a demand from the people for answers on why Brad Stevens went through with this trade. From other sources like MassLive, Brian Robb a trusted sports reporter states “George has a player option for $56.6 million for the 2027-28 season that he is a lock to pick up, which is just $4.5 million less than Brown’s number.” The main drive to trade for Paul George was to pay less and also have more flexibility with extensions for other players. Stevens plan is to ultimately bet on future draft picks and to further develop the current roster, specifically the younger players. With this decision the team chemistry could potentially be altered knowing that Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have been playing together for almost a decade now. Collin Kennedy writes in an article for 985thesportshub, “With Brown now further down the East Coast, Tatum is the No. 1 option in Boston, without the help of a fellow All-NBA teammate. While the runway is now clear for Tatum to put up possibly a career year on the stat sheet, he’ll still need some help on the court.” The Celtics could potentially be in trouble since this would be the first year he’s running the team on his own. Now that Jaylen Brown is gone, die-hard fans are going to experience a new type of team, while not knowing what to expect for the future of the team. Overall Jaylen Brown is gone and fans are in shambles but only time will tell what the future of the team will look like.
