On the beautiful Sunday afternoon of July 13, Zumix hosted its annual Walk for Music to raise awareness of its programs and opportunities it brings to the youth. Zumix is a non-profit organization run in East Boston who give young people and adults opportunities to learn about music, music production, and different forms of media.

The event kicked off at Zumix Firehouse with a showcase from the staff band they have. While the band performed, shirts were given out, food was served, and face painting was available for people of all ages.

I interviewed Katie Gibson, a staff member at Zumix. She had a lot to say about this event. Something she’s enjoyed about this event is that “It’s always such a great day, it’s joyful, and all about the community and we get to celebrate the Zumix community. And there’s dogs.” Gibson had mentioned that this event was held so “Young people can have a safe and creative space to explore their passions and have fun” and also said that the community “Should come join us! It’s free and open to all ages and people. Everyone is welcome.”

Going on the walk, the group walked throughout the East Boston community. The group visited Bremen Street park and took breaks to catch our breath and listen to groovy music and sing along to the Hot Tamales band. This helped the community connect and raise awareness of what Zumix is. Families and strangers in the park and around the area where it was happening were looking over and smiling, there were laughs and giggles — conversations from people who just met each other.

We had walked the East Boston Greenway to Piers Park where more showcases happened and where the event ended the night. Zumix had guest singers come up to the stage and even had the Zumix group, Voces, perform alongside a local band. They had performed with many other guest singers from Zumix like Cory Depina and others who are part of the Zumix staff and community.

Closing off the night, Zumix celebrated with a tres leches cake and more performances from local bands. Spectators, such as families, passersbys and neighbors were seen enjoying this event after stopping by to take a look at what was happening.
